Bond 23 Will Be….SKYFALL!

Daniel Craig as James Bond

It’s been a bumpy road for Daniel Craig, but he’s finally going to make it to his third Bond film, now officially announced being titled ‘Skyfall’.

Remember when he was first cast and all the anger and confused looks by fans at that decision? It didn’t help that he was immediately following one of the most beloved 007’s – Pierce Brosnan.

One look at Craig and fans began complaining and taunting ‘James Blonde’ cries to anyone who would listen (mainly to other Bond fans).

“He doesn’t look like James Bond is supposed to look!”

A website even started up proclaiming that “Daniel Craig is not Bond”. (it’s still up by the way).

Movie audiences scratched their heads with the decision. Like it or not Daniel Craig was James Bond and he was starring in the next 007 film, 2006’s Casino Royale. After fans saw it the complaints about Craig shifted to praise.

Casino was a huge hit and Craig’s performance wowed audiences and critics. Some even suggested an Oscar nomination was in order. Craig starred in one of the biggest successes of the Bond series and fans couldn’t wait for another.

2008’s Quantum of Solace was once again an enormous success, but generally it got a much cooler reception as Craig’s debut. Everyone was fully expecting a third film, but weren’t expecting to have to wait four years for it.

As it happened in the early 90’s, the Bond films were put on hold. This time MGM filed for bankruptcy and Bond 23 was postponed indefinitely until the studio was back on its feet. How long will that take?

Four years.

Finally, Bond fans got the news they’ve been hoping for – Bond 23 has started filming.

Skyfall press conference

At a crowded press conference Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson announced the title of the film will be Skyfall and is set to be released November 7, 2012.

They were pretty careful with information regarding the film and didn’t go into any details regarding the story. The official synopsis says, “In Skyfall, Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost”.

Craig and Judi Dench will be returning. Javier Bardem is set to play the villain. Berenice Marlohe and Naomie Harris will be the new Bond girls. Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney and Ben Whishaw have all be confirmed to be part of the cast. And the film will be shooting on location in London, China, Turkey and Scotland.

It will be a stand alone story and not in anyway connected to Quantum of Solace.

That’s about all we know right now. As filming gets underway I’m sure we’ll start getting nuggets of info about the story and what we can expect. For now all we mainly know is that Bond is returning.

Do you think this movie have Oscar written all over it?

  2. I haven't really gotten caught up in the Oscar talk. Just because Mendes is directing doesn't mean it's necessarily Oscar bait. I hope they just focus on making a film that satisfies fans and not worry about winning awards.

I would have a Bond 9.1 title as "Casting Craig" or something like that. I'm really interested in just how he got to be James Bond. Won't this also be the 50 year mark for Bond as well? Hopefully this film will really do the legacy of Bond justice and won't be a sight-gag, over-CGed, big name actress bullshit movie like Die Another Day.

  4. The casting of Craig should be interesting to really look into. I think the decision of Craig caught a lot of fans offguard.

This 50th anniversary thing is making a little nervous for just the reason you said. If they went so overboard for the 40th anniversary with that Die Another Day mess…..I shudder to think what they could possibly do for the big 5-0. Hopefully they won't make it such a big deal and not feel compelled to remind us of it in every scene.

You made a very good point near the end of your video. Since they have so much time in between films will it turn out any different than say the average every two years routine. When you mentioned that, I automatically thought of GoldenEye. I mean, yes it was six years after LtK, but at the same time many considered it (GoldenEye) to be a huge improvement over the previous film. Who knows. I just hope the director takes out the shakey camera that was present in QoA and make it all unique. But, can't have it all. We can only hope for the best I guess.

Craigs first outing was superb the 2nd offering was poor but not because of Craig the script and director are the thing – the cast is excellent. The 40th Die Another Day was a steaming pile of shite but made loads of money.Lets hope they have learnt the lessons of the past and have another look at Casino Royale. It's all about the quality and actually having the audience care about the story and how it affects the characters- Dalton did a pretty good job of it in many ways he laid the foundations for Craigs Bond.

I just hope they keep the gadgets out, keep the film in the classic Craig genre(in the spirit of Casino Royale) and not try to mimic any of their previous work. None of the been there done that feeling I kept getting with Brosnan
Craig is his own Bond and should remain so.
